He commenced his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who took him in the 20th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft with the 602nd overall pick. Turner made the switch from shortstop to third base in 2012. He was chosen to the All-ACC first team, as well as a second-team All-American by Perfect Game and a third-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Baseball America, for his outstanding performance.
