  • Between 1978 and 1988, Sauli Niinisto ran his own legal company in Salo before joining national politics. He served on the Salo city council from 1977 to 1992 before being elected to the Finnish Parliament from the constituency of Finland Proper in 1987.
  • He was elected party leader of the NCP in 1994 and then became Justice Minister in Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen’s first administration in 1995.
  • In 1996, he was appointed Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister under social democrat Lipponen.
