Amateur Career

Anthony Joshua began boxing at the age of 18 at Barnet, North London’s Finchley ABC. He won the Haringey Box Cup in 2009 and 2010, as well as senior ABA Championships. He rejected a 50,000 Pound opportunity to become a professional football player. In 2011, he won the ABA Championships and a gold medal in the GB Championships, becoming the first British amateur champion. Anthony became professional in 2013 and made his official debut on October 5th under the Matchroom Sport promotional banner. In the first round, he beat Emanuele Leo of Italy. In October 2013, he defeated Paul Butlin, Hrvoje Kisicek, Dorian Darch, Hector Alfredo Avila, Matt Legg, Matt Skelton, and Konstantin Airich. In April 2016, he dethroned Charles Martin as IBF heavyweight champion, then contested his world title against Dominic Breazeale in June 2016 and Eric Rivera in November 2016. Joshua won the vacant WBA (Super) championship in April 2017 by defeating Wladimir Klitschko. He is said to have made around 15 million pounds from the battle. The rematch between Anthony and Klitschko was set for November 2017. The rematch was never held as Klitschko retired in August 2017. His fight with Kubrat Pulev is set to take place in October. On the 17th of May 2021, Tyson Fury declared on social media that he and Joshua would fight on the 14th of August 2021 in Saudi Arabia. However, Anthony and Fury’s camps were unable to negotiate a deal, and the WBO said on May 22nd that Joshua would have to fight Usyk, with an agreement in place by May 31st. On the 20th of July 2021, an official statement was made, confirming that Joshua and Usyk will fight on September 25th at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Anthony was accused of racism for saying “show them where it hurts, abstain from investing your time in their stores and economies, and invest in black-owned enterprises” at a Black Lives Matter rally in Watford in June 2020. Some people mistook this as a call to boycott white businesses.

He responded by claiming that the speech was not his own and that he had simply read it on behalf of a buddy. “If you believe I’m a racist, go screw yourself,” he said.
