Career Highlights

He commenced his professional career with the St. Catharines. He spent three seasons with this team before being promoted to the Chicago Black Hawks in 1959. He played the whole 1961 season and won the Stanley Cup with a total of six goals. The Chicago player won the 1967-1968 season as well. He then goes on to win the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. He teamed up with Chicago businessman Irv Tiahnybik to start the American Hearing Impaired Hockey Association (AHIHA) in 1973 after winning the trophy.

This famous star was also one of the first players to wear a full-time helmet, which he wore until an errant shot ripped a piece off one of his ears. It was afterwards patched. Later, he was plagued by severe back ailments, forcing him to retire during the 1979–80 season. Mikita established himself as a gifted player and was inducted into both the Hockey Hall of Fame and the Slovak Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983 and 2002, respectively.

Following his retirement, he was becoming a golf pro at Kemper Lakes Golf Club. On May 24, 2011, Mikita was treated with mouth cancer. Later on, he developed Lewy body dementia, which is a degenerative condition. Later, it was revealed that he has no recollection of his previous life owing to his sickness, and that he is being cared for by his wife Jill in the month of June. In the film Wayne’s World, he played himself in a cameo role. This famous leader died at the age of 78, on 7th August 2018.
