Seema Punia

Seema Punia (born July 27, 1983) is a discus thrower from India. Her personal best throw is 63.72 m (209.1 ft), which she achieved in the 2021 National Senior Inter-state Athletic Championships. She hit the headlines as she represented India in Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.

Early Life

Seema Punia was born in the Haryana village of Khewda in the district of Sonipat. Her athletic career began at the age of 11 as a hurdler and long-jumper, although she eventually switched to discus throwing.

 

Her gold medal performance at the World Junior Championships in Santiago in 2000 earned her the nickname “Millennium Child.” She attended the Government College in Sonipat.

Career and Achievements 

She originally won a gold medal at the 2000 World Junior Championships, but she was stripped of it after testing positive for pseudoephedrine. Following the removal of her award, her National Federation issued her a public warning in accordance with the rules in effect at the time. In 2002, she won a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships.

She received the Bhim Award from the Haryana state government on June 26, 2006, after winning a silver medal in the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Her absence from the 2006 Asian Games drew a lot of media attention. Prior to the Games, she tested positive for a steroid (stanozolol), but her National Federation cleared her to compete. She, on the other hand, chose not to participate in the Games.

She took bronze in the Commonwealth Games in 2010. She came in 13th place at the London Olympics in 2012. She won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games and a gold medal in the Asian Games in 2014.
