From celebrities’ arrests to divorces, to the rising popularity of international series like Squid Game and Money Heist, here’s everything that sparked interest in the world of entertainment this year.
This year was not the most successful in terms of movie production. In reality, in the Indian film business, 2021 was marked by controversy, arrests, and many legal feuding. Unfortunately, these created more buzz than genuine film releases (when they did happen). Here’s a short overview of our list of entertainment newsmakers that received the most attention, both locally and worldwide. Please keep in mind that the list is not in any specific order.
Arrest of Aryan Khan, investigation into Ananya Pandey
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) detained Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan on October 3 in connection with an alleged narcotics raid. NCB said that it had discovered evidence linking Aryan and his two other companions (Arbaaz Merchant and Munmun Dhamecha) to international drug trafficking, despite the fact that Aryan was not found in possession of any illegal substances. Aryan was ultimately granted bail on October 28. However, the bail process took a little longer than expected, and he was freed on October 30. But, while he was being imprisoned, things went bad on social media, as they always do when a celebrity becomes involved in anything even controversial. Despite the negative campaigning, there were SRK supporters who remained by him throughout this challenging time, including close friends like Salman Khan, Suniel Shetty, Hrithik Roshan, and Juhi Chawla.
While Aryan stayed in Arthur Road Jail, actress Ananya Pandey was questioned by the NCB in connection with the case. The NCB came on Pandey’s house after claiming to have discovered important WhatsApp conversations between Aryan Khan and her.
The Raj Kundra case
After a five-month inquiry, actor Shilpa Shetty’s husband and businessman Raj Kundra was arrested on July 19. Kundra was detained based on a FIR filed against him in February.
Kundra was reportedly involved in the development and distribution of pornographic content via multiple OTT platforms, according to the authorities. During the investigation, Shilpa denied knowing anything about the case. Kundra was finally granted bail on September 20. The case is still pending.
Munawar Faruqui, a stand-up comedian, was detained on January 1 for allegedly infringing on the religious emotions of Hindus during his show. Eklavya Singh, the son of a BJP MLA, made the complaint against the comedian. Munawar and four others were also charged of making a show while violating all Covid rules.
Meanwhile, Munawar’s lawyer claims that the complaint against him is unclear and that it was only filed because of political pressure. Faruqui was granted bail on February 5 and discharged on February 6, more than a month after being imprisoned. As it granted temporary release to the singer, the Supreme Court termed the FIR as unclear.
The Tandav controversy
Tandav, a Saif Ali Khan-led Amazon Prime show directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, was one of the year’s most anticipated online series. Tandav attracted everyone’s attention immediately on its January 15 debut, thanks to several creative decisions in the show. The trolling began online and soon received attention, with BJP MLA Ram Kadam filing the first FIR against the producers for infringing on ‘religious emotions.’
Following this, a FIR was registered in Lucknow for portraying Hindu deities in an unpleasant manner. The performance was also charged of ‘spreading communal tension.’ Abbas Zafar issued two remarks, the first of which was an apology, and the second of which confirmed that he had chosen to ‘make modifications’. Meanwhile, additional FIRs against the squad were filed in Haryana and areas of Uttar Pradesh.
This year, several of the most loved celebrity couples choose to part ways and create their own individual ways while promising to remain friends. First, Aamir Khan and his ex-wife Kiran Rao issued a joint statement on their divorce, saying, “In these 15 lovely years together, we have shared a lifetime of adventures, pleasure, and laughter, and our relationship has only grown in trust, respect, and love.”
We’d like to start a new chapter in our life as co-parents and family to each other, rather than as husband and wife. We began a planned separation some years ago, and we now feel comfortable establishing this arrangement of living separately while sharing our lives as an extended family.” The two continue to collaborate on a professional level. The announcement was made in July.
Popular couple Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Naga Chaitanya, on the other hand, announced to their fans in October that they are no longer married. The former wedding took place in 2017.

The divorce of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, and the name change
After seven years of marriage, Kim K filed for divorce from West in February of this year. Even after the news broke, West, who recently changed his name to Ye, argued at a Drink Champs podcast that the couple is still married and Kim is still his wife. During an interview in November, the rapper-singer remarked, “There ain’t no paperwork.”
But it was probably Kim’s appearance in a bridal gown at West’s Donda gala that attracted so much headlines. This was months after the couple’s breakup was announced in the news. Kim is currently said to be dating SNL comedian Pete Davidson and has been photographed with him several times.
