Louise Woodward is a British former au pair who was convicted in 1997 of involuntary manslaughter in the death of eight-month-old Matthew Eappen in Massachusetts, USA. At the time of her imprisonment, she was a 19-year-old au pair employed by Matthew’s parents, Deborah and Sunil Eappen, in November 1996. She began working for Drs. Sunil Eappen and Debbie Eappen are in Boston, caring for their two sons, 2-year-old Brendan and 8-month-old Matthew Eappen, after quitting one job because she was uncomfortable with an 11 p.m “curfew.”

On February 4, 1997, Louise summoned an ambulance when Matthew Eappen stopped breathing. At Boston Children’s Hospital, he was placed on life support. Louise was arrested the next day and pleaded not guilty to child violence. She did, however, admit to shaking Matthew and dumping him on a pile of towels. Later, on February 10th, Matthew died of a cerebral hemorrhage, and Louise was charged with murder.

The jury convicted her guilty of second-degree murder after 26 hours of deliberation, and Woodward was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 15 years. Then Louise’s legal team filed an appeal, and the court lowered the verdict to involuntary manslaughter at a post-conviction relief hearing. Louise was released when her sentence was reduced to time served (279 days). Following her release from prison, she went to the United Kingdom and was interviewed by Martin Bashir for a special edition of the BBC’s “Panorama.”

What happened to Louise Woodward?

Following her arrest, Woodward admitted to “tossing” and “lightly shaking” the baby, words which were later used against her at trial, with the prosecution arguing that Eappen had died as a result of a brain hemorrhage caused by Shaken Baby Syndrome.

Woodward’s lengthy trial gripped both the US and UK public, and there was a clear divide amongst everyone who had followed the case over whether or not she was innocent. Woodward herself pleaded not guilty to battery of a child, but the prosecution painted her as an “a liar” and she was ultimately convicted of second-degree murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence.

Is Louise Woodward still in prison?

Despite being sentenced to 15 years in jail, Woodward’s legal team pleaded for a change in verdict immediately after her conviction, revealing that the jury was split on the murder accusation. In response, the case’s judge, Zobel, reduced Woodward’s conviction to involuntary manslaughter.

Because of the change in conviction, her sentence was reduced to time served. Given that Woodward had previously spent 279 days awaiting trial, she was released from prison barely 10 days after getting her initial life sentence.
