The two were recording the violent clashes in the area between criminal organizations, law enforcement officials, and indigenous people. The two were last seen on June 6, 2022, in the Javari Valley, a remote area in the extreme western Amazon rainforest of Brazil that is home to thousands of indigenous people from over 20 different tribes.

The area was replete with several organized criminal operations, including unauthorized mining, logging, and poaching. The two vanished over the course of their task. Amarildo and Oseney da Costa de Oliveira, two suspects, were detained in relation to the couple’s disappearance. After 10 days of searching including the army, navy, and police, one of the suspects, Amarildo, led the investigators to the location of the human remains’ burial place.
