Avinash Sable is an Indian track and field athlete who specializes in 3000m steeplechase events and has the 2019 national record of 8:21.37. He shattered the 37-year-old national record in the 3000 m steeplechase to win gold. Gopal Saini previously held the record, which he set in Tokyo in 1981.

He hits the headlines as he qualified for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, in 2022.

Early Life / Personal Life

Avinash Sable was born on September 13, 1994, in the Mandwa village of Maharashtra’s Beed district. He comes from a farming family. He used to run or walk 6 kilometers from his house to school as a child because there was no public transportation in his hamlet. He had a strong patriotic sense for his nation and always wanted to do something for it.

So, after finishing his 12th grade in 2011, he enlisted in the Indian army. From 2013-2014, he served with the Indian Army’s 5 Mahar regiment in the Siachen Glacier. Within a year, he was relocated to Rajasthan, and subsequently to Sikkim in 2015.

Avinash graduated from the University of Pune and currently resides in Bangalore. He is currently serving in the army as a Junior Commissioned Officer (Gazetted officer). He is not married and stays at home with his family.

Career and Achievements

Avinash first took part in Army sporting competitions at the request of his comrades. He eventually qualified for the Army’s services team in 2015. He qualified for the cross country national championships for the first time two years later, in 2017. Avinash continued to improve his timing and stamina, and it was at this point that Captain Amrish Kumar, Chief Coach of the Army’s distance running program, saw him. Avinash has since concentrated on the 3000 m steeplechase category.

Avinash Sable, who missed the 2018 Asian Games owing to an ankle injury, competed in the 37th National Games, where he broke a national record held by Gopal Saini for the first time in 37 years. At the 2018 National Open Championships in Bhubaneswar, he ran 8:29.80.

He competed in the Federation Cup in Patiala in 2019 and achieved a national record of 8:28.94 as well as a personal best. He qualified for both the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships and the 2019 World Athletics Championships. Sable earned silver at the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships in Doha, his first international competition, with a time of 8:30.19. He was also the first Steeplechaser since 1991 to qualify for the World Athletics Championships.

On October 1, 2019, he set a new national mark in the World Athletics Championships, clocking 8:25.23. The 25-year-old from Mandwa, Maharashtra, arrived in dramatic circumstances after first failing to make an impression. After the Athletics Federation of India successfully complained that he was blocked by other athletes during the heat race, he was later included among the men’s 3000m steeplechase finalists. In the final, he set a new national record of 8:21.37, finishing 13th out of 16 runners and qualifying for the 2020 Summer Olympics.

CONTROVERSY:

Avinash Sable made headlines in 2018 when he stated that he would prefer training under an Indian coach since they understand the needs of Indian players better than foreign trainers. Despite having a contract until 2020, long-distance running coach Nikolai Snesarev resigned.

All of this occurred after Avinash opted to practice with his army coach, Amrish Kumar. Snesarev has trained several Indian athletes, including Lalita Babar, Sudha Singh, and OP Jaisha.
